Energy: Example Energy Transfers Flashcards
1
Q
What is the law of conservation of energy?
A
Energy can be transferred usefully, stored or disappated but it cannon be created or destroyed.
2
Q
Why will a pendulum gradually come to a stop?
A
- there will be friction on the fixed point on which the pendulum swings and also friction between the air and the pendulum as it passed through the air particles
- friction causes energy to be transferred to thermal energy
- this energy has been disappated
- this will cause the pendulum to gradually swing with less energy eventually coming to a stop
3
Q
How can friction on a pendulum be reduced?
A
- use of a lubricant on the fixed point
- by removing the air particles from around the pendulum
4
Q
When the pendulum swings to its maximum height, how much gravitational potential and kinetic energy will it have in its stores?
A
- maximum GPE
- minimum kinetic
5
Q
What energy is transferred as the pendulum swings back to its resting position?
A
GPE is transferred to kinetic energy
6
Q
What energy will the pendulum have at its resting point?
A
- maximum kinetic energy
- minimum GPE
7
Q
As the pendulum swings back to its highest piint, what energy is transferred?
A
Kinetic is transferred to GPE
