Energy Emma Flashcards
Where is energy stored
In fuels
What are fuels
Fuels are anything that we can use later to do work for us
Where do people get their energy from and what do they use it for
They get it from food, and use the energy to play sport and work
What else do we use energy for
We use energy to keep warm and heat up food. We use it to get us to different places and to light up our homes
Name 6 everyday fuels that we use
Coal Wood Petrol Paraffin Gas Candle wax
Is electricity a fuel
Yes, but it is made from coal
What is output energy
When we burn fuels we get useful output energy such as heat and light. These do work for us
What do fuels need to set them alight
They need heat and air ( oxygen)
Explain the experiment that shows that candles need air to burn
Materials:
3 candles all the same height, matches, 2 glass bottles ( 1 bigger than the other)
Method:
Light the 3 candles, place the jars over 2 of the candles
Result:
The flames of the candles under the jars went out
Conclusion;”:
Candles need air to burn
Explain the experiment done to show that candles need oxygen in the air to burn
Materials:
Trough of water with a candle fixed onto a plate at the bottom, glass jar to fit over the top
Method:
Light the candle, place glass jar over the candle. Observe
Result:
The candles flame went out. When the flame went out the water rose up inside the jar.
Conclusion:
The candle used the oxygen in the air to burn, and the water took the place of the oxygen.
What can we conclude from the experiments done with the candles
Air containing oxygen helps the fuels to keep burning. Fuel does not burn without air.
What 3 things are needed for a fire
A start up source - match, lighter,lightning
A fuel - coal, wood, grass, gas, petrol, paraffin or candle wax
Air ( oxygen)
Explain how matches and firefighters are used to give output energy
Matches and firefighters are a source of heat. This heat lights the fuels, and air helps the fuel to keep burning. Fuel doesn’t burn without air
How can we prevent fires
- don’t play with fire
- turn off the stove when not in use
- don’t leave candles and lamps alight when no one is watching
- don’t place candles next to an open window
- don’t leave heaters next to flammable things
- don’t place candles near an open window where curtains could knock them over
- keep candles away from pets as they could knock the candles over
What do you do in case of a fire
- sand or a blanket smothers the fire
- a fire extinguisher should be close by and you should know how to use it
- don’t put water on an electrical fire, it will give you a shock
- use the pot lid if there is a fire in the pot
- Stop,Drop and Roll
- pour cold water on a burn and get to a doctor
- crawl out if the house is in fire
