Q

What are the disadvantages of a renewable energy source?

A

The machines that use renewable energy are expensive. It is not always reliable as sometimes:
The wind does not blow
Clouds block out the sun
There are no rivers or rain

Q

What is kinetic energy?

A

An object that is moving can do work. All moving things have kinetic energy.

16
Q

Give 7 examples of potential energy.

A

Nothing

17
Q

Give 2 examples of kinetic energy

A
  1. A flying rubber can work when it flattens a house of cards
  2. A swinging hammer does work on a nail
18
Q

Energy we can see is called ………….. Energy?

A

Light

19
Q

Give some examples of light energy.

A

Candles - the wax is the source
Coal/Wood fires
Paraffin gas lamps
Electricity - this may be generated by burning coal or using the energy from water.

20
Q

Energy we can feel is ……………. Energy?

A

Heat

21
Q

How does heat flow?

A

Heat flows from areas of higher temperature to areas of lower temperature.

22
Q

Name a few sources of heat energy.

A

Electricity,gas,wood,coal,sun,paraffin.

23
Q

What do you use to measure temperature?

A

A thermometer.

24
Q

What is the unit of measurement for temperature in South Africa?

A

Degrees Celsius

25
Q

What is a thermometer made of and how does it work?

A

Thermometers are made of glass and filled with a liquid which is either mercury or alcohol. When the liquid gets warmed it moves up the thermometer.

26
Q

What is heat?

A

When molecules of any atoms get more energy in them than they had before, they move faster and that is called Heat. When the molecules move faster they hit against each other and bounce apart and they end up further away from each other than they were before.

27
Q

In heat, where does the energy come from?

A

It can come from the sun, volcanoes, from friction, nuclear fusion or many other sources.

28
Q

How does heat move between objects?

A

If two things are touching each other, heat will flow from the hotter one to the colder one unless they are the same temperature. The molecules of the hotter one will slow down and the molecules of the colder one will speed up until they are all moving at the same speed and the two things have the same temperature.

29
Q

Give an example of how heat moves between two objects.

A

If you put an ice cube in your mouth, your mouth will get colder and the ice cube will melt.

30
Q

Where is energy stored

A

In fuels

31
Q

What is fuel

A

Fuel is anything that we can use later to do work for us

32
Q

Where do people get their energy from and what do we use it for

A

From food, we use it to play sport and work
