Energy Concepts Flashcards
Define work.
Amount of force needed to move an object.
Define energy.
The energy of a body is the amount of work it can do.
What is the equation for work done?
work done = force × distance moved in direction of force
W = Fx
What is the relationship between work done and energy transferred?
They are equal.
How does the work done equation change if the force is at an angle?
W = Fxcos∅
What if force is exerted at 90°?
There is NO work done or energy transferred.
What if force is exerted >90°?
The work done is negative and energy is transferred from the object. This can slow the object down.
What is the principle of conservation of energy?
Energy cannot be created or destroyed, it can only be transferred.
Define kinetic energy.
The energy a body possesses because of its motion.
What is the work done-kinetic energy equation?
work done = change in kinetic energy
W = 1/2mv^2 - 1/2mu^2
What does a horizontal line represent on a force-distance graph?
force = constant
What does a straight line represent on a force-distance graph?
force is NOT constant
What does the area under a force-distance graph represent?
The area under a force-distance graph represents work done.
What is the equation for kinetic energy?
KE = 1/2mv^2
where m = mass and v = velocity
Define gravitational potential energy.
The energy a body possesses because of its position in the gravitational field.
