Energy and states of matter Flashcards
Thermal Energy
the energy that is generated and measured by heat.
Kinetic Energy
energy which a body possesses by virtue of being in motion.
Heat
the form of energy that is transferred between systems or objects with different temperatures (flowing from the high-temperature system to the low-temperature system).
temperature
the degree or intensity of heat present in a substance or object, especially as expressed according to a comparative scale and shown by a thermometer or perceived by touch.
melting
becoming liquefied by heat.
boiling
the action of bringing a liquid to the temperature at which it bubbles and turns to vapor.
evaporation (vaporization)
the action of bringing a liquid to the temperature at which it bubbles and turns to vapor.
condensation
the conversion of a vapor or gas to a liquid.
Freezing
the freezing point of water.
solidifying (solidification)
make or become hard or solid.
sublimation
the transition of a substance directly from the solid to the gas state, without passing through the liquid state.
deposition
phase transition in which gas transforms into solid without passing through the liquid phase.
