Energy and Physical Activity Flashcards
What are the main energy suppliers?
Carbs, fats and proteins
Proteins only used when others arent available
What is energy used for?
It is converted into a usable energy source known as adenosine triphosphate (ATP)
Carbohydrates
- CHO
- broken down to glucose to be transported in the blood
- stored in muscles and liver as glycogen
- glycogen provides energy for ATP production under both aerobic and anaerobic conditions
- high and low intensity exercise
Fats
- broken down to triglycerides
- major source for low intensity long term activity and rest
- can only break down under aerobic conditions
- provides most of atp during rest
- low intensity exercise such as jogging
Protein
- broken down into amino acids
- only used in small amounts in the production of ATP
- mainly used when carbs and fats are done
- low intensity of very long duration exercise
Phosphocreatine system
- ATP-PC system
- phosphocreatine breaks down and donates its phosphate molecule to ADP to remake ATP
- anaerobic system (without oxygen)
Lactic acid system
- Produces new atp using glycogen
- glycogen (anaerobic glycolysis) = ATP + lactic acid (stops muscles
- anaerobic system
Aerobic system
- uses glycogen
- glycogen (aerobic glycolysis) =ATP + H2O + CO2 + heat
What is atp?
High energy molecule consisting of one adenosine molecule and three phosphate molecules
Storage of ATP
- muscles store it
- enough atp is stored for 2 seconds worth of activity
