Energy and Motion Test Flashcards
What is energy?
The ability to cause change or do work.
What are the 2 main types of energy?
Potential and kinetic.
What is potential energy?
Stored enery; energy that has the potential to do something.
Potential energy fact:
PE (potential energy) has the ability to do work, perform a function, or carry out an action.
Examples of potential energy:
- A parked car (not running/stationary)
- Chemicals in a bottle (have the ability to change/cause a chemical reaction)
- Frozen pizza (has the potential to give you energy)
What is kinetic energy?
Moving energy; energy that is in motion.
Kinetic energy fact:
KE (kinetic energy) is the work, function, or action, actually being done/taking place.
Examples of kinetic energy:
- Baking soda and vinegar mixed together producing bubbles
- A person riding a bike
- MARS Rover taking pictures of the landscape
What are the forms of energy?
Mechanical energy, electrical energy, heat energy, light energy, chemical energy, atomic energy, and sound energy.
How many forms of energy are there?
There are 7 forms of energy.
What is mechanical energy?
The energy in moving things that are working or moving.
Examples of mechanical energy:
- A clock
- A car engine
- Falling water
What is electrical energy?
The E (energy) of moving electrons.
Examples of electrical energy:
- e’s (electrons) moving in circuits
- A radio
- A refrigerator
- A smart phone
What is heat energy?
The energy of moving molecules.
Examples of heat energy:
- Molecules in boiling water
- A portable heater
- A fire pit
What is light energy?
The energy of photons (particles of light E)
Examples of light energy:
- The sun
- A lamp
- A star
- A glow stick
What is chemical energy?
The E stored in chemicals.
Examples of chemical energy:
- Baking soda
- Gasoline
- A glow stick
- Pizza
- Gatorade
What is atomic energy?
The E stored in the nucleus of an atom.
Examples of atomic energy:
- Nuclear power plant
- Atom bomb
What is sound energy?
The E of sound waves.
Examples of sound energy:
- SInging
- A car horn
- An alarm clock
What is energy change/transformation?
When one form of energy changes into another.
- The arrows represent that a change/transformation is taking place. (—>)
What is position?
An object’s distance & direction from a reference point.
What is motion?
The state in which one object’s distance and direction from another is changing.
Motion fact:
Motion depends on one’s point of view!
What is a reference point?
A place of object used for comparison to determine if something is in motion. (the starting point you choose to describe the position of location of an object)
What is displacement?
The shortest distance/movement between two points. (a comparison between your starting position & your ending position)
What is distance?
The total movement/distance from one point to the next point.
