Energy Flashcards
What does potential mean?
Stored
Energy in battery stored until you release it when connected to circuit
What are the nine types of energy?
Kinetic, thermal, chemical potential, nuclear, sound, light, electrical, gravitational potential, elastic potential
What is gravitational potential?
Like height energy
Higher up you go, more energy you have
What is energy?
Ability to do work
Work is done when energy is transferred from one form to another
What is energy measure in?
Joules
Food energy is measured in kilojoules or kilocalories
Kinetic examples
Airplane, car, running
Thermal examples
Geothermal, fire, sun
Chemical potential examples
Food, batteries, petrol
Nuclear examples
Nuclear bomb, powerstation
Sound examples
Speaking, singing, ultrasound
Light examples
Sun, lightbulb, fireworks
Gravitational potential examples
Rocket, Lift, crane
Electrical examples
Chargers, radio, lightning
Elastic potential examples
Rubber bands, windup toys, trampoline
Is all of the original energy transferred?
What energy is transferred, only part of the original energy is transferred usefully
Efficiency equation
Useful energy output
/
Total energy input
What is the law of conservation of energy?
Energy cannot be created or destroyed, but transferred from one form into another
Why is there not infinite energy?
Energy becomes increasingly spread out and more difficult to use
Normally ends up being heat energy
What is heat?
Type of energy that flows from warm to cold areas
What happens if there is a difference in temperature between two places?
Heat will pass between them until thermal equilibrium
What is thermal equilibrium?
Temperatures are balanced
What are the three types of heat transfer?
Conduction, convection, radiation
What does a great difference in temperature mean?
Greater rate of transfer of energy
