Energy 5.1 - Energy Around You Flashcards
What is energy?
Energy is something that does things or has the potential to do things.
What is energy measured in?
-Energy is measured in Joules or J.
What are the different forms of energy?
- Kinetic energy
- Sound energy
- Light energy
- Heat energy
- Electrical energy
- Gravitational potential energy
- Chemical energy
- Elastic potential energy
- Nuclear energy
(Acronym) Kevin sounds like he enjoyed Gary’s cooking experience never.
What is Kinetic energy?
The energy of movement. Anything that moves has Kinetic energy. e.g. Jimmy running
What is sound energy?
The energy that air has when it is vibrating. Your ears and brain interpret the vibrating as sound. e.g. Jimmy playing the guitar
What is Light energy?
The kind of kinetic energy with the ability to make types of light visible to human eyes. It can be radiated from objects such as the sun.
What is Heat energy?
The energy that usually comes from the Sun, flames, chemical reactions, electrical devices or humans and animals. Heat warms/dries/melts.
What is Electrical energy?
The energy produced by the movement of electric charge. This energy comes from power stations, batteries or lightning that powers TV’s and computers.
What is elastic potential energy?
Energy stored in a stretched or squashed spring. The energy is released when you let go the tension.
What is Gravitational potential energy?
Energy stored by an object above ground. e.g. A banana on a string.
What is chemical energy?
Energy stored in substances. For example, this energy is released by your body when you digest food. Wood, paper, apples, petrol and batteries also contain this energy.
What is nuclear energy?
Energy stored inside the tiny atoms that make up all matter. Nuclear energy is released in a nuclear power plant, when a nuclear bomb explodes and inside the sun.
What is energy transfer?
Energy passing from one object to the other. For example; when you kick a ball, kinetic energy from your foot is transferred to the ball causing the ball to move.
What three ways can heat energy be transferred?
Conduction, convection and radiation. (CCR)
What is conduction?
Conduction happens between two objects that are in contact. Heat transfers from the hotter object into the cooler one until they are both the same temperature. For example touching a hot tripod.
