Energy Flashcards
1
Q
Wind energy advantages
A
- Clean fuel source → doesn’t pollute the air
- Sustainable → doesn’t run out
- Little cost → one of lowest priced renewable energy
- Abundent → found everywhere, MEDCs + LEDCs can use it
2
Q
Wind energy disadvantages
A
- Good sites are normally far away → costs money to transfer the energy
- Noisy and unaesthetic → loud and ugly
- Rotors may damage wildlife
3
Q
Nuclear energy problems
A
- Dangerous waste product → uranium and platium stay radioactive for 1000s of years
↳ billions of £s used to contain
- Lots of water used → make sure water is not contaminated
- High costs → LEDCs can’t use it
- If something goes wrong, many people can be contaminated
↳ chldren 5 generations down could be born with defects
4
Q
Fuelwood in DR Congo (LEDC)
A
- Around 2.6 billion people in LEDCs rely on fuelwood alone for cooking + heating (around 40% of the world)
- Demand exceeds dead and fallen branches → deforestation
- All other forms of energy is: too expensive, lack of technology or not right geology
5
Q
Deforestation in DR Congo
A
- 80% of DR Congo live in poverty
- Commercial logging removed many trees in 1998
- 70% of the population rely on farming and need fuelwood + charcoal from the forest
- Clearance for farming and hunting bush meat
- Government don’t monitor deforestation
