Energy Flashcards
What is energy is food measured in ?
Kilocalories (kcal) or kilojoules (kJ)
1kcal = 4.2 kJ
What is oxidation?
Food is burned and energy is produced in the body’s cells. Oxygen is needed for this process, which is called oxidation.
Name (6) factors that influence energy requirements.
- ) Size : big people need more energy than small people.
- ) Age : adults need more energy than young children.
- ) Activity : active people need more energy than inactive people.
- ) Climate : people in cold climates need more energy than people in warm climates.
- ) Gender : males usually need more energy than females.
- ) Pregnancy : pregnant and breast feeding women need extra energy.
RDA for energy for children

- 7-10 = 2000
RDA for energy for adolescents
•male 11-18
•female 11-18
- male 11-18 = 2600
* female 11-18 = 2100

RDA for energy for women
•during pregnancy
•during lactation
During pregnancy = 2400
During lactation = 2700
Give an account of energy balance.
Energy balance means energy intake should be equal to energy output. If we take in extra energy it will be stored in the body in the form of fat. Therefore extra energy intake can lead to becoming overweight. Lack of energy intake can lead to a person becoming underweight.
What are empty kilocalories?
Some foods provide energy but contain no other nutrients.
E.g fizzy drinks and table sugar
