13
Q

Would sound travel at the same speed through a gas at different temperatures?

A

No because it travels through the colder particles faster because they are closer together

15
Q

Why does light faster than sound?

A

Because you can always see something before you hear it.
Speed of sound: 330 metres per second
Speed of light: 300,000,000 metres per second

Q

In general, what type of material makes a good conductor of heat?

A

Metal

18
Q

Which materials are poor conductors of heat?

A

Glass, wood, plastic

19
Q

Are the abilities to conduct heat and light related?

A

Yes, because metals are good at conducting heat and energy.

20
Q

Heat energy can move through substances using what three different methods?

A

Conduction, convection and radiation.

Heat always moves from hot to cold.

21
Q

What is Conduction?

A

The process by which heat energy moves through solid materials.

22
Q

How does conduction work?

A

Heat energy makes the particles vibrate. These particles make neighbouring particles vibrate so the heat energy is transferred throughout the material.

23
Q

What is convection?

A

The process by which heat energy moves through liquids and gasses.

24
Q

How does convection work?

A

As the gasses and liquids are heated, the particles move further apart and become less dense. This will rise through the cooler surrounding particles.

25
Q

What is radiation.

A

The process by which heat energy moves through a vacuum (like in space) and between air particles.
Heat will travel in a straight line at high speed when traveling through space.

26
Q

Heat always moves from higher_____to lower_____.

A

Temperature.

27
Q

The state of matter that conduction occurs in.

A

Solids

28
Q

The method by which heat is able to move liquids and gasses

A

Convection

29
Q

When water is heated it moved in this direction

A

Upward

30
Q

The movement of particles in a liquid or gas when being heated is called a convection_____.

A

Current

31
Q

The process of heat transfer that moves between air

A

Radiation

32
Q

Which colour cars would be better in hot climates

A

Light and shiny

Reflects well, absorbs poorly

33
Q

Why do saucepans have plastic handles

A

So the heat will not be conducted through the handle

Plastic’s a good insulator

34
Q

In colder climates, why is it useful to have insulation in the roof?

A

Insulation traps heat inside building because it’s a poor conductor

35
Q

Why are circulation systems for swimming pools made of black plastic piping?

A

Absorbs heat from the sun

36
Q

What is work?

A

Using energy to move something over a distance

37
Q

What is renewable energy?

A

Energy that is easily replenished for example solar and wind energy

38
Q

What is non-renewable energy?

A

Energy that are not easily replenished, for example, fossil fuels

39
Q

What is a dependant variable?

A

A variable that is depends on another
The dependent you measure
On the Y axis

40
Q

What is an independent variable?

A

A variable that doesn’t depend on another
The variable you change
On X axis

41
Q

What is a controlled variable?

A

The variable you keep the same.

42
Q

What is a hypothesis?

A

A sentience that states how the independent variable affects the dependent variable.
