Energy Flashcards
What is gravitational potential energy
Gravitational Potential Energy is the energy that an object gains when it is pulled away from a gravitational force.
If you lifted a chair off of the floor, it gains the “potential” to accelerate towards the Earth.
The gravitational potential of an object is dependent on mass, gravitational field strength and height
Definition of kinetic energy
Kinetic energy is the energy of movement
0 degrees Celsius
273 Kelvins
Definition of specific heat capacity
The value of heat energy required to raise the temperature of 1kg of
a substance by 1oC
Specific latent heat of fusion
The energy required to change the state of substance from a solid to
a liquid
Specific latent heat of vaporisation
The energy required to change the state of substance from a liquid to
a gas
Specific latent heat (in general)
Different substances require different amounts of heat energy to change the state of the substance, be that from solid to liquid, liquid to gas and vice versa.
Temperature
Temperature is defined as the average kinetic energy of molecules and atoms in a system, and thus it determines how hot or cold a substance is.
pressure
Pressure is force per unit area
so if you push on your desk with your hand, the pressure on the desk is the force in Newtons divided by the surface area of your hand.
