Energy Flashcards
What is the principle of conservation of energy
Energy cannot be created or destroyed only changed form one form into another. So, the total amount of energy in the universe is always the same, it does not change. Any device which changes energy from one form into another is called a transducer.
What different types of energy are there?
Magnetic
Kinetic
Heat
Light
Gravitational
Chemical
Sound
Electrical
Elastic
Nuclear
What is energy measured in
Joules
What is the amount of energy needed to lift a 100g apple 1 meter
1 joule
Name energy resources
Oil
Gas
Nuclear (uranium ore)
Wind
Solar
Water
Biomass
Coal
What makes an energy source renewable
A renewable resource is one which will naturally replenish within a human lifetime
Define non-renewable resource
One that has a finite supply and it will run out sum time e.g fossil fuels
Why is nuclear energy non-renewable
Uranium ore will run out eventually
What are the environmental implications of energy production
Global warming
Acid rain
Air pollution
Visual pollution / habitat destruction
What are the effects and solutions of global warming?
Global warming / climate change is the release of CO2
This increases the average global temperature
Solutions to fix this are, recycle / reuse, plant trees for CO2 absorption
What is acid rain, what effects does it have and what are the solutions to fix it.
Acid rain is when, rain water absorbs sulfur dioxide and carbon dioxides. This rain fall and acidifies lakes and soil. Forests die and aquatic life suffers. Scandinavia suffers due to Uk coal and oil power plants.
Solutions: shut down coal power stations, absorb damaging gases at source
Define gravitational potential energy
This is the energy an object has because of its position in a gravitational field.
What is the equation for gravitational potential energy
Ep=mgh
What is potential energy measured in
Joules
What is kinetic energy
It is the energy the object has because it is moving
