Energy Flashcards
What is energy?
Energy is the ability to do work.
Energy cannot be created or destroyed, only changed from one form to another.
What is the concept of energy?
Fission- The splitting of a nucleus into two smaller atoms accompanied by the release of energy.
Fusion- The joining of two atoms to form a larger nuclei. Eg. Two hydrogen atoms fuse to make one helium atom.
Atom- The smallest unit into which matter can be divided.
What are the two forms of energy?
Potential (stored energy- runners in starting position) and Kinetic (movement energy- ball hitting a ground)
What are the types/ sources of energy?
Renewable- replenishable natural resources not depleted with use. Eg: Solar, Wind, Hydro
Non Renewable- Has a finite supply Eg: Coal, Oil, Natural Gas, Nuclear Energy
Discuss the renewable energy sources?
Solar Energy- Generated from the sun and we use solar panels (potential) to convert the sunlight to electricity (kinetic).
Wind Energy- Energy in wind can be harnessed through wind turbines (potential) to generate electricity for residential & commercial uses (kinetic) eg: batteries
Hydropower- Generated from moving water eg. dam (potential) to convert into electricity.
What is sustainability?
Meeting the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs.
What is the importance of renewable energy sources?
- Reduces air and water pollution
- Keep energy prices stable thus helps with energy security
- Abundant supply
- Creates employment and opportunity
Advantages & Disadvantages of renewable energy sources
Advantages:
* Reliability
* Continual Source
* Low cost operation
* Low global warming emissions
Disadvantages:
* Vulnerable to weather & climate change events
* High cost of development
* Large set-up space
* Not available in all areas
* Distruction of agricultural land
Advantages & Disadvantages of non-renewable energy sources
Advantages:
* Concentrated and found in relatively large amounts
* Widely available and affordable
Disadvantages:
* Contribtes to global warming
* Produces greenhouse gases
* Non-renewable
What are the energy usages in the caribbean?
- T&T and Guyana- Crude oil and natural gas
- Guyana and Jamaica- Bauxite
Concerns on fossil fuel usage
- High reliance
- High energy cost
- Energy security issues
What are the energy and gender issues?
- Women are lessinvolved in energy decisions
- Lack of gender diversity in the employment of the energy sector
- Gender gap (Lack of representation- Women in STEM)
How can we reduce carbon emissions?
- Waste reduction- reduce, reuse, recycle
- Energy conservation- trying not to use any energy eg: turning off lights
- Energy efficiency- producing the same output but with less energy eg: cooking a one pot
- Reforestation
- Legislation
