Energy Flashcards
Two forms of energy
Kinetic Energy-the energy of motion
Potential Energy-stored energy
What is a calorie
the amount of heat required to raise the temp of 1ml of water one degree C
what is redox rection
A coupled reaction must contain a reduction reaction and an oxidation reaction
What are the two laws of thermodynamics
- Energy cannot be created or destroyed
Energy can only be converted from one form to another - disorder is more likely than order disorder is always increasing
What is the free energy equation
G=H+TS
free enrgy=enthalpy+(entropyxtemp)
what is enthalpy
energy contained in a molecules chemical bonds
What is entropy
disorder in the universe
what is activation energy
extra energy needed to get a reaction started
what is a catalyst
substance that lower the activation energy needed
what is ATP
adenosine triphosphate
what is an Enzyme
molecules that catalyze reactions in living cells most are proteins they lower the activation energy and are not changed or consumed by the reaction
what is a substrate
molecule that will under go a reaction
what is active site
region of the enzyme that binds to the substrate
what is an inhibitor
are molecules that bind to an enzyme to decrease enzyme activity
Competitive inhibitors
compete with the substrate for binding to the same active site
