Energy Flashcards
Name some non-renewable energy sources
Oil
Coal
Gas
Nuclear
What is the difference between a renewable and non-renewable energy source?
Renewable Energy Source - Can be replenished indefinetly
Non-Renewable Energy Source - Cannot be replenished indefinetly - will eventually run out.
Advantages and disadvantages of electric cars over petrol/diesel
Advantages
- No greenhouse gas emissions
- Saves money on the cost of fuel
- Higher acceleration rate
Disadvantages
- More expensive
- Safety hazard - are dangerous because they aren’t very loud
- Spends a long time charging
Describe how nuclear fission is different from nuclear fusion.
Fission - the splitting of a nucleus.
Fusion - the joining of nuclei.
The UK Government has proposed to decarbonise the power sector by 2025. Describe what is meant by the ‘decarbonisation’ of the power sector.
Explain what this means.
- Decarbonisation means reducing fossil fuel-based power stations (1)
- This also leads to preventing carbon-based emissions.
- It also means to embed more carbon capture and storage [CCS] in electricity generation
- The aim is for emissions to reach ‘net zero’ by 2050
- increase the amount of renewable energy sources for electrical generation.
Explain how electricity is generated in a fossil fuel power station.
Fossil fuel is burnt. (1)
Water is heated and turns to steam. (1)
Steam turns a turbine. (1)
Turbine turns a generator. (1)
Explain the particle motion in a gas.
Particles move at random speeds (1)
Particles move in random directions (1)
Weak forces between the particles (1)
No fixed shape of gas(1)
