What is endometriosis
Pelvic inflammatory condition associated with growth of endometrial tissue found outside the uterus
symptoms can be asymptomatic to severe symptoms
Most common symptoms include - dysmenorrhea ( pain associated with period), infertility, dyspareunia
Risk factors
- over age of 20
- weight loss attmepts
- depression and anxiety
- heavy menses
- menarche before age of 12
- nulliparity
- smoking
-family history
Symptoms
Dysmenorrhea
chronic pelvic pain
infertility
bloating
heavy bleeding
has many Nonspecific symptoms which can lead in the delay of diagnosis for endometriosis
Pathophysiology
Not fully understood
but some support that its retrograde menstrual flow
Non-pharmacologic treatment for endometriosis
Exercise
acupuncture
massage
CBT
Surgery
Medication management
First line - NSAIDS, CHCs, Progestins
Second line - GnRH agonist or antagonists, and danazol
Third line - Aromatase inhibitor
Danazol (second-line treatment)
MOA - androgen that suppresses FSH and LH production
SE - weight gain, acne, hirsutism, lipid abnormalities, liver dysfunction, change in blood glucose
BLACK BOX WARNING FOR THROMBOEMBOLISM
contraindicated in pregnancy and breast feeding
