Emergency contraception
Efficacy- more effective the sooner used
Hormones- Ella and Copper IUD - none, Levonorgestrel pill: progestin
Administration- copper IUD - one insertion, Ulipristal acetate (ella) - one Rx pill, Levonorgestrel pill : one OTC dose
How to start- within 5 days of unprotected sex, wait 5 days to restart hormonal birth control if ulipristal acetate used
Late dose?- lower efficacy with increased time, use within 5 days of unprotected sex
Side effects- serious: no long term or sever side effects, Common: nausea, vomiting, headache, dizziness, breast pain, stomach pain
Benefits- pregnancy prevention
Return to fertility- Immediate
Copper IUD - how it works
- interferes with sperm viability and function
- most effective EC across all BMI and weights
Ulipristal acetate - how it works
Inhibits ovulation and leads to follicular rupture
- effective up to 5 days better efficacy than LNG (effective after LH surge has begun)
Levonorgestrel - how it works
inhibits ovulation
-OTC
may be less effective > 165lbs
labeled for 72 hours
