Endogenous & Exogenous Infection Flashcards
What are the normal bacteria in humans called?
Normal microbial flora
What is an endogenous infection?
An infection from ourselves (if our own flora get into the wrong places)
What is an exogenous/communicable infection?
Person to person, environment, non-human sources
What are the 3 types of endogenous infections?
- Migration
- Perforation
- Blood
What type of infection is cystitis
Endogenous infection - MIGRATION
Infection of lower urinary tract
How is cystitis caused?
Migration of gut flora (E coli, gram-negative bacteria) that causes local infection which then spreads to bladder
What does bowel perforation lead to?
Contamination of the abdominal cavity with faecal flora
Can have severe life-threatening infection results
What is an infection caused by bowel perforation?
Faecal peritonitis
What type of infection is endocarditis?
Endogenous - BLOOD
How is endocarditis caused?
Dental work may allow mouth flora to enter blood stream. Can reach heart and invasion can occur, especially if valve tissue is abnormal (congenital defect)
What is the result of endocarditis?
Causes inflammation and structural damage
What is an example of mouth flora?
Streptococci
What type of infection is impetigo an example of?
Exogenous - direct contact
What is impetigo? What is it caused by?
Superficial skin infection due to staphylococci and/or streptococci
How is impetigo spread?
Person to person
