Bacteria Flashcards
Features of bacteria
- Unicellular (prokaryotes)
- Cell membrane
- Cell wall
- No nucleus (genetic material in form of DNA)
- Move using flagella and pili
- Reproduce asexually
Different shapes of bacteria
Round (coccus)
Rod (bacillus)
Groupings of bacteria
Clusters (staphy)
Chains (strepto)
Pairs (diplo)
Spirals (vibrio, spirilla, spirochaetes)
What do some bacteria retain gram stain but some don’t?
Varying composition of bacterial cell wall
Gram-positive (purple)
Gram-negative (pink)
Why is classifying bacteria helpful?
Allows you to predict which antibiotics will be effective quickly and tells you what antibiotics to prescribe
Streptococcus pnuemoniae is an example of a bacterial infection. What does is cause?
Pneumonia
What classification is streptococcus pneumoniae?
- Gram-positive
- Cocci in pairs (diplococci)
Where do streptococcus pneumoniae colonise?
Nose and throat. Invade other sites (e.g. lungs causing pneumonia)
What are the symptoms of streptococcus pneumoniae?
Cough, dirty sputum, chest pain, breathlessness, fever
Can lead to blood stream infection, meningitis, death
