Endodontic infection Flashcards
1
Q
What is endodontic infection?
A
- Intact enamel and dentine protect the pulp so no infection
- Infections to pulp happen secondary to tooth infections/trauma (e.g. caries Streptococci and Lactobacilli)
- Derived from endogenous microflora
2
Q
What are the bacteria most likely present in endodontic infection?
A
- Bacteroides
- Prevotella
- Lactobacillus
- Streptococcus oral
- Clostridium
- Fusobacterium
3
Q
What microbes are present in primary endodontic infections ?
A
- Polymicrobial
- Dominated by Gram-negative anaerobic rods
- Enterococcus faecalis found in 40%
4
Q
What microbes are present in secondary endodontic infections?
A
- One or few bacterial species
- Gram-positive microorganisms
- More likely to contain E.faecalis than primary
5
Q
What are some virulence factors of E.faecilis?
A
- Endotoxins
- Adhesins
- Collagenases
- Hyaluronidase
- Immune evasion
6
Q
What is enterococcus faecalis?
A
- Gram positive coccus (single or pairs)
- Facultative anaerobe
- Aggregative, adhesive, biofilm formation
- Superoxide formation
- gelatinase
- Cytolysin
- Lipotechoic acid
