Endocrinology Flashcards
1
Q
What peptides are produced by anterior pituitary
A
GH, LH, FSH, TSH, ACTH, PRL
2
Q
What does ACTH control?
A
Glucocorticoid release by adrenal cortex
3
Q
What is the normal FB loop between the AP and gonads?
A
When gonads fail or are removed, there is a rise in FSH and LH
4
Q
What is the normal FB loop between the AP and thyroid?
A
When thyroid fails, there is low thyroxine. TSH stimulation is thus increased. Increased thyroxine inhibits TSH
5
Q
What does GHRH do?
A
Stimulate GH release
6
Q
What does somatostatin do?
A
Inhibit GH release
7
Q
What does DA do in terms of AP?
A
Acts as a PRL inhibiting factor
8
Q
what are the symptoms and signs of pituitary adenoma
A
- mass effects include headache and altered vision (bitemporal hemianopia)
- hormonal effects include hypopituitarism, hypogonadism, adrenal insufficiency, hypothyroidism, DI and GH deficiency
- alternatively, hypersecretion of pit hormones is observed
