What is diabetic amyotrophy?
A
A form of diabetic neuropathy characterised by severe aching or burning pain in hips and thighs, followed by asymmetrical weakness and wasting of the muscles of proximal lower extremities

What is Conn’s syndrome?
A
Primary hyperaldosteronism caused by an aldosterone-producing adenoma

What is the classic presentation of primary hyperaldosteronism?
A
- Hypertension
- Nocturia and/or polyuria
- Lethargy
- Mood disturbance
- Weakness
- Paraesthesia
- Muscle cramps

What investigations support a diagnosis of primary hyperaldosteronism?
A
- Plasma K = normal to low
- Aldosterone/renin ratio = high aldosterone, low renin

What is the management of primary hyperadlosteronism?
A
- Surgery = adrenalectomy
- Medical = amiloride or spironolactone
- Immunosuppressive (familial PHA) = glucocorticoids (dex or pred)

75ml 20% glucose by IV infusion
