12
Q

What does the Anti-duiretic hormone do

A

ADH helps to conserve water if the body is dehydrated

by causing more water to be reabsorbed back into the blood from the collecting ducts of the kidney, so less water is lost in urine and it maintains the water volume in the body.

Thus maintaining water volume in the body

13
Q

How does the Hypothalamus control release of hormones

A

When hormones from the anterior lobe of pituitary gland is needed, the hypothalamus secretes releasing factors that travel in the blood to the anterior lobe, stimulating it to produce and release required hormones

When hormones stored in posterior lobe is needed, nerve impulses from hypothalamus stimulated posterior lobe to release stored hormones

18
Q

hormones in the small posterior lobe

A

ADH and Oxytocin

19
Q

hormones in the large posterior lobe

A

Growth hormone.
Thyroid stimulating hormone.
Follicle stimulating hormone.
Luteinizing hormone.
Prolactin.

20
Q

what is the Thyroid stimulating hormone secreted by

A

Secreted by the anterior lobe of the pituitary gland

21
Q

what does the Thyroid stimulating hormone do

A

TSH stimulates the thyroid gland to secrete its hormone called thyroxin

22
Q

what is the Follicle stimulating hormone secreted by

A

the anterior lobe of the pituitary gland

23
Q

what does the Follicle stimulating hormone do in females

A

stimulates oogenesis in the ovary - the formation of the eggs

24
Q

oogenesis

A

the formation of the eggs

25
Q

what does the Follicle stimulating hormone do in males

A

stimulates spermatogenesis in the testis - formation of the sperm

26
Q

spermatogenesis

A

formation of the sperm

27
Q

what is the Luteinizing hormone secreted by

A

the anterior lobe of the pituitary gland

28
Q

What does luteinizing hormone do?

A

Stimulates ovulation (release of an egg) in females.
Formation of corpus luteum.

29
Q

corpus luteum

A

mass of cells that forms in an ovary and is responsible for the production of the hormone progesterone during early pregnancy

30
Q

what is Prolactin secreted by

A

by the anterior lobe of the pituitary gland

31
Q

what does Prolactin do

A

Stimulates the production of milk in the female mammary glands after birth of the baby and for as long as the baby is breastfeeding and Also responsible for the maternal instinct

32
Q

what does the adrenocorticotropic hormone do

A

Stimulates the adrenal cortex

and Secrete the hormones cortisone and aldosterone

33
Q

what does the Interstitial cell stimulating hormone do

A

stimulates testes to secrete testosterone

34
Q

Hypersecretion

A

too much

35
Q

Hyposecretion

A

too little

36
Q

Growth hormone

A

Promotes skeletal and muscular growth - stimulates protein synthesis

37
Q

Gigantism

A

hypersecretion of growth hormone, caused by tumour in pituitary gland, very rare

38
Q

Pituitary dwarfism

A

hyposecretion of growth hormone, caused by disease of the anterior lobe, body proportions normal, just smaller

39
Q

Acromegaly

A

hypersecretion of growth hormone in adults, large hands, jawbone and brows

40
Q

Over-secretion as a child causes

A

Gigantism

41
Q

Under-secretion as a child causes

A

Dwarfism

42
Q

Over-secretion of growth hormone as an adult causes

A

Acromegaly

43
Q

acromegaly

A

Soft tissue begins to grow abnormally

44
Q

cause of acromegaly

A

tumour pressing on the pituitary
