endocrine system and role of adrelanine Flashcards
what does the endocrine system do
- works with nervous system to control bodily functions
- slower than the nervous system
what does the es instruct glands to do
- instructs glands to release hormones into the blood stream
what are examples of glands and hormones
- thyroxine = released in thyroid gland
increases heart and metabolic Raes throughout body, affects growth
what does es do during stressful situations
- uses the sympathetic pathway during stressful situations , it then uses the endocrine system and the autonomic system to work together for the flight or fight response
stages of the endocrine system
- hypothalamus triggers response , changing body from resting state (parasympathetic) to physiologically aroused state (sympathetic)
adrenaline released from adrenal medulla into the blood stream
adrenaline produced physiological responses in body e.g increased heart rate and breathing rate
increased heart rate leads to increased blood flow ( more oxygen and glucose being pumped to muscle and brain)
once stress/danger has passed , parasympathetic ns returns body to resting state
what is adrenaline
- hormone produced by adrenal glands
- strong effects on the cells in cardiovascular system
- increases heart rate and contracting blood vessels
what does the endocrine system rely on
hormones
name the differences between endocrine and nervous
endocrine
- relies on hormones
- transported in blood
- slower but effects last longer
nervous
- relies on eléctrical impluses
- transported in nerve cells (neurons)
- very fast but effects dont last longer than a second
outline 1 glands that form part of the endocrine system and outline their functions
- adrenal gland secrets adrenaline
- causeing physicological changes associated with arousal, fight or flight
