Endocrine system and glands Flashcards
where they are, the hormones they produce and their function in the body
1
Q
what is the endocrine system
A
- communication system which controls internal enviroment of the body
- releases hormones into blood to signal cells to behave certain ways
- slow but widespread
- works close with nervous system
2
Q
endocrine consists of
A
- endocrine glands –> located all around body and release hormones into blood stream
- hormones –> chem substances released in one part of body and travel thru blood stream and affect activities of cells in body, chem messengers everywhere
3
Q
endocrine glands are
A
- pituitary gland
- thyroid gland
- thymus
- adrenal medulla and cortex
- pancreas
- gonads (ovaries in F, testes in M)
4
Q
pituitary gland hormones and action
A
- antidiuretic (ADH) –> controls water balance
- human growth (HGH) –> controlscell growth and development
- also stimulates other glands to release their hormones
5
Q
thyroid hormones, action and location
A
- produces hormone thyroxine
- responsible for controlling rate of chem reactions in cells (metabolism)
- wrapped around larynx (adams apple)
6
Q
pancreas hormones and action
A
- insulin –> lowers blood sugar levels
- glucagon –> raises sugar levels
7
Q
adrenals hormones and actions
A
- adrenaline –> fight or flight response
- noradrenaline –> fight of flight response
8
Q
female gonads hormones and actions
A
- ovaries
- oestrogen –> sexual characteristics and development + menstrual cycle
- progesterone –> controls ovary and uterus in pregnancy
9
Q
male gonads hormones and actions
A
- testes
- testosterone –> sexual characteristics and development
10
Q
order of height of each endo gland
A
highest. pituitary
2. thyroid
3. adrenal medulla and cortex
4. pancreas
lowest. gonads
