What is the endocrine system’s function?
It works alongside the nervous system to control vital function in the body
How is endocrine system different from nervous system?
It works slower than nervous system but has widespread and powerful effects
What does endocrine system have?
Series of glands that release chemicals known as hormones
Where are hormones secreted into?
The blood stream
Does hormones affect our behaviour in different ways?
Yes
What is the major endocrine gland known as?
Pitatuirty gland
Where is the pituartiy gland located in?
The brain
Known as master gland - control all release of hormones from all other endocrine glands in body
What does the pineal gland secrete?
Melatonion
(sleep)
What does pituatirty gland secrete?
ACTH
Specific hormone released
What is the thyrodi gladn concerned with?
Metabolism
e.g overeactive thyroid - lose weight
linked with age and weight
What is adrenal galdn concerned with?
Adrenal medulla - adrenaline - fight or flight
Adrenal crotex - cortisol - long term stress
Whats up with diabetes?
- Type 1 = inject (heredity)
- Type 2 = Diet
What are the four glands we have to learn about?
- Pituitary gland
- Adrenal gland
- Testes gland
- Ovaries gland
What is function of pituitary gland?
- Releases hormones - regulating body functions and controlled by hyperthalamus- recieveing information from many sources for basic functions
- Organ
- Hromone ACTH
What is the function of adrenal gland?
- It is at the top of kidney , each gland is made up of adrenal cortex (outer part) and adrenal mueddula (inner part)
- Adrenal Cortsex
- Adernal Medulla
- Hormones released by low blood pressure
