Endocrine system Flashcards
What are the 10 organs of the endocrine system?
Hypothalamus, pineal, pituitary, thyroid, parathyroid, thymus, adrenal, pancreas, ovaries, and testes
Which is a slower and more prolonged effect and why: An endocrine signal or a neuro signal?
Endocrine because hormones are released into the blood stream whereas the neuro system uses electrical signal
Name an organ that is both exocrine and endorine
Pancreas- exocrine stomach enzymes endocrine insulin
What do exocrine glands have that endocrine glands don’t?
Ducts
What does the pancreas do?
Detects glucose levels, secretes insulin, glucagon, secretes stomach enzymes and bicarb
What is negative feedback?
The organ will release a secretion causing an opposite effect on imbalanced homeostasis.
What does the hypothalamus do?
Integrates nero and endocrine systems- secretes hormones that inhibit or stimulate the release of hormones from the pituitary
How does the hypothalamus, pituitary, and thyroid play a part in thyroid hormone?
The hypothalamus releases thyroid releasing hormone which tells the pituitary to release thyroid stimulating hormone which tells the thyroid to release thyroid hormone. When enough thyroid hormone is in the bloodstream, the hypothalamus and pituitary both stop making TRH and TSH
Name a positive feedback hormone released by the hypothalamus and stored in the pituitary during labor
Oxytocin
What 2 types of hormones are there
Steroid (fat soluble, change DNA) and nonsteroid (adhere to outside of cell and stimulates intracellular action)
What does the pineal gland do?
Releases melatonin to maintain circadian rhythm
What does the pituitary gland do?
Releases hormones that regulate the thyroid, adrenal, ovaries, and testes. Anterior- Adrenocorticotropic hormone, FSH, TSH, LH, GH, Prolactin Posterior- ADH, Oxytocin
What does the thymus do?
Releases Thymosin. Also a lymphoid organ where immune T cells are produced.
What does the parathyroid do?
Releases parathyroid hormone that regulates plasma calcium levels through stimulation of osteoclasts and inhibiting calcium release by kidneys
What does the adrenal gland do?
Releases epinephrine and cortisol
