endocrine system Flashcards
ADRENAL GLAND
hormone
target organ
effect
hormone - adrenaline
target organ - vital organs
effect - incr. HR
OVARY
hormone
target organ
effect
hormone - oestrogen
target organ - ovaries, uterus, pituitary gland
effect - controls puberty + menstrual cycle
TESTES
hormone
target organ
effect
hormone - testosterone
target organ - male reproductive organs
effect - controls puberty in males
PANCREAS
hormone
target organ
effect
hormone - insulin
target organ - liver
effect - maintaining glc. levels
outline the fight or flight response
Generated by the ANS (Sympathetic branch)
Send message to adrenal glands
Triggers release of adrenaline to the endocrine system and noradrenaline to the brain
Adrenaline prompts physical changes
What physical changes does adrenaline bring about
incr HR
- more blood flow to organs –> spread adrenaline around the body
- more blood + glc pumped to muscles for respiration
Pupils dialate
- improve vision
digestive system halts
- conserve + release stored energy
sweat
- facilitate temp regulation
Deep and more frequent breathing
- increase O2 intake
Muscle tension
- improve reaction time speed
When i is the flight or fight response activated
In times of danger
What is the function of the fight or flight response
To protect and enable us to survive
fight or flight evaluation
REDCUTIONISM vs HOLISM
Simplifies complex idea of fight or flight response into two systems
GENDER BIAS:
Early research into fight or flight response typically conducted on males (androcentrism) + consequently, researchers assumed that findings could be generalised to females. ∴ beta bias within this area of psychology as psychologists assumed that females responded in the same way as males, until TAYLOR provided evidence of “tend and befriend’ response: women more likely to protect their offspring (tend) + form alliances w/ other women (befriend), than fight an adversary or flee. ALSO, the fight or flight response may be counterintuitive for women, as running (flight) might be seen as a sign of weakness + put their offspring at risk of danger.
EVAL: modern day life rarely requires such an intense biological response. ALSO, modern day stressors can repeatedly activate fight or flight response, → neg consequence on our health. E.g, humans who face a lot of stress + continually activate the SNS, continually incr their BP → damage to blood vessels + heart disease. TS fight or flight response is a maladaptive response in modern-day life.
