Endocrine System Flashcards
What are the 2 neuroendocrine control center?
hypothalamus and pituitary
pancreas
- secretes both enzymes and hormones
- release insulin
- Exocrine (digestive enzymes)
- endocrine (secretes hormones)
insulin
hormone that triggers uptake of glucose into cell, decrease blood sugar
beta cells
able to adjust level of insulin they secrete in proportion to amount of blood glucose detect
alpha cells
when blood glucose LOW, these cells secrete glucagon
glucagon
stimulates it target cell in liver to convert hepatic glycogen stored
diabetes
-disease result from pancreatic hormone regulation malfunction
hypothalamus
-integration center btw ENDOCRINE and NERVOUS system
releasing hormones
stimulates
inhibiting hormones
restrict
hyperthyroidism
malfunction of regulatory feedback loops leading to overproduction of TH
positive feedback
causes increase in secretions of hormone, rather than cessation at homeostatic set point and range
FSH
- secreted by AP/estrogen
- stimulates DEVELOPMENT of eggs in ovaries (sperm in testes)
LH
- also produced by AP
- responsible for TRIGGERING ovulation in female gonads and production of testosterone
