- Secrete hormone directly into blood (apart from thyroid)
- Diverse embryological origins
- Ductless glands
- Role is communication

A
- Primary purpose endocrine e.g. discrete organs, pituitary, thyroid, parathyroid, adrenal, pineal
- Endocrine combined with other functions e.g. pancreas, testes, ovaries, placenta
- Secondary endocrine function e.g. liver, kidney, thymus, heart, GIT

- Peptide e.g. oxytocin, vasopressin
- Amine e.g. dopamine, melatonin, adrenaline
- Steroid e.g. oestradiol, cortisol, aldosterone
- Protein e.g. GH, insulin, ACTH

How is hormone release regulated?
A
Overall is regulated by homeostasis
- Hormonal - pituitary releasing hormones e.g. FSH
- Neural - adrenal medulla
- Humoral - BP and kidneys JG apparatus, physical change that causes release of hormone
