Endocrine System Flashcards
1
Q
aldosterone
A
- produced by adrenal cortex
- stimulates reabsorption of Na+ from the collecting duct (takes water with it)
- stimulates secretion of K+
- causes an increase in blood pressure and blood volume
- causes production of more concentrated urine
- release is stimulated by angiotensin II, which is formed as a result of renin
2
Q
ADH (anti-diuretic hormone) (vasopressin)
A
- produced by the hypothalamus
- stored in the anterior pituitary
- increases permeability of the collecting duct
- promotes reabsorption of water
- increases blood volume
- decreases blood osmolarity
3
Q
oxytocin
A
- produced by hypothalamus
- stored in posterior pituitary
- secreted during childbirth to increase the strength and frequency of uterine muscle contractions
- release represents a positive feedback mechanism
4
Q
epinephrine
A
- produced by the adrenal medulla
- peptide hormone
- release is stimulated by the sympathetic nervous system
- causes bronchial dilation
- conversion of glycogen to glucose in liver and muscle tissue
- inhibits “vegetative” functions (digestion)
- neurotransmitter
- increase heart beat and basal metabolic rate
5
Q
PTH (parathyroid hormone)
A
- produces by parathyroid
- promotes the release of calcium from the bones into the blood stream done by osteoclasts
