what is a gland?
a gland is an organ in the body that produces chemicals to help our body survive.
what do hormones do?
hormones control and regulate functions. they are released directly into blood stream. they only act on particular cells in the body.
what is the hypothalamus
a small part in the brain that links the nervous system to the endocrine system. releases hormones that effect body temp, metabolism, and water retention
what is the pineal gland?
it controls our sleeping and waking. melatonin is a major hormone
what is a thyroid gland?
it regulates metabolic rate. thyroxine is a major hormone
what is a parathyroid gland?
it maintains calcium levels. parathormone is a major hormone
what is the pituitary gland?
it is also known as the master gland as it coordinates the endocrine system. it controls the activities of other glands in the body. releases: HGH, and thyroid stimulating hormone
what is the pancreas?
it also called the islets of Langerhans. it regulates blood glucose levels. insulin lowers blood glucose levels and glucagon increases it.
talk about the adrenal gland
it has 2 layers. the outer cortex which releases aldosterone and the inner medulla which releases adrenaline
