Endocrine system Flashcards
Giantism
Over secretion of somototropin before puberty. Most commonly caused by a benign tumor of the pituitary gland.
Diabetes Insipidus
Prevents water from being reabsorbed in the kidneys.Caused by decreased secretion of vasopressin, or antiduretic hormone.
Diabetes Insipidus Symptoms
Excessive Urination(polyuria), Excessive thirst (polydispia), Dehydration, weakness and constipation.
Hypothyroidism
Under activity of the thyroid gland/ deficiency of thyroid hormones.
Hypothyroidism Sypmtoms
Fatigue, weight gain, slow heart rate
Cretinism
Type of Hypothyroidism; develops in infancy/ early childhood leading to mental retardation, and abnormal dwarfed stature.
Pituitary Gland
“Master Gland,” regulates other endocrine glands and produces hormones like growth hormone
Cushing’s Syndrome
Caused by oversecretion of glucocortcoids on the adrenal cortex.
Cushing’s Syndrome Symptoms:
hyperglycemia (high blood sugar), hypertension, muscle weakness, fatigue, tendency to bruise
Parathormone
Regulates calcium and phosphate levels in the blood.
Graves Disease
Severe form of hyperthyroidism; more common in women than men.
Graves Disease Symptoms
Strained facial expression, exophthalmia, goiter, nervousness/ irratabilty
Pancreas
Organ that produces insulin and glucagon and secretes digestive enzymes.
Hyperthyroidism
Condition where the thyroid gland produces too much hormone
Hyperthyroidism Symptoms:
Rapid Heartbeart, Weight Loss, Nervousness
Addisons Disease
Disease where the adrenal glands don’t produce enough cortisol or aldosterone.
Thyroid Hormones
Hormones that regulate metabolism, growth and energy
Addisons Disease Symptoms
Dehydration, diarrhea, fatigue, hypotension(low blood pressure), anorexia, weightloss, and muscle weakness.
THS
Thyroid Stimulating Hormone; Hormone released by the pituitary gland that stimulates the thyroid gland to produce hormones.
