Endocrine System Flashcards
What are glands?
An organ which produces a specific substance for secretion
What are the two types of glands?
exocrine gland - have ducts and carry chemicals directly to the place they act. Not part of the endocrine system.
endocrine - found throughout the body. have no ducts and release secretory chemicals (hormones) which travel in blood
What is a hormone?
Chemical messengers produced by endocrine glands and transported around the body. Bind to receptors on target cells and trigger response from that cell. Hormones can be peptide based or lipid based.
What are the types of hormones?
Control - cause glands to stop or produce other hormones
effector - act on tissue or organ itself to produce response
