endocrine system Flashcards
(30 cards)
endocrine glands
ductless glands that secrete hormones into the blood; controlled by nervous system
adenohypophysis
anterior lobe of the pituitary gland
growth hormone (a)
regulates mitosis & growth of body cells
GHRH - growth hormone releasing hormone which targets this leading to growth of body cells and puberty
thyroid stimulating hormone (a)
controls thyroid activity
adrenocorticotropic hormone (a)
controls activity of adrenal cortex
CRH targets this which also targets adrenal gland to release cortisol
Follicle-stimulating hormone (a)
stimulates oogenesis and spermatogenesis
luteinizing hormone (a)
stimulates release of male and female sex hormones
prolactin (a)
milk production
melanocyte stimulating hormone (a)
releases melanin causing darkening of skin
neurohypophysis
posterior lobe
oxytocin (n)
causes uterine contractions during labor and milk release during suckling
antidiuretic hormone (n)
inhibits urine formation
thyroid
bilobed, just below larynx
thyroid hormone (t)
it increases cellular activity in skeletal, reproductive, and nervous systems
calcitonin (t)
is released in response to increased blood calcium levels; decreases blood calcium levels by stimulating the deposition of calcium into bone
parathyroids
4 masses on back of thyroid
parathyroid hormone
increases blood calcium levels by removing calcium from bone
pancreas
hormones are secreted from islets of langerhans; beta and alpha cells
beta cells
secretes insulin in response to high levels of glucose; insulin decreases blood sugar
alpha cells
secretes glucagon in response to low levels of glucose; glucagon increases blood sugar
adrenal gland
atop kidneys; 2 areas: cortex and medulla
cortex
secretes steroids = corticosteroids
mineralocorticoids (ag)
regulate sodium and potassium levels
glucocorticoids (ag)
increases breakdown of fats and proteins to generate blood glucose = anti-stress
