Endocrine System Flashcards
What is the endocrine system
A network of glands spread throughout the body that secrete hormones to regulate and coordinate bodily functions
What are hormones?
Chemicals that are released from glands that circulate in the blood-stream and are carried to target structures around the body. Each hormone will excite/stimulate a specific part of the body, this usually leads to the release of other hormones
Hypothalamus - Hormone and Effect
Hormone - None
Effect - Stimulates and controls the release of hormones from the pituitary gland
Anterior Pituitary Gland - Hormone and Effect?
Hormone - Adrenocortical trophic hormone (ACTH)
Effect - Stimulates the adrenal cortex and the release of cortisol during the stress response
Posterior Pituitary Gland - Hormone and Effect?
Hormone - Oxytocin
Effect - Responsible for uterus contractions during childbirth
Pineal Gland - Hormone and Effect
Hormone - Melatonin
Effect - Responsible for important biological rhythms, including the sleep-wake cycle
Thyroid Gland - Hormone and Effect
Hormone - Thyroxine
Effect - Responsible for regulating metabolism
Adrenal Medulla - Hormone and Effect?
Hormone - Adrenaline and Noradrenaline
Effect - Fight or flight response
Adrenal Cortex - Hormone and Effect?
Hormone - Cortisol
Effect - Stimulates the release of glucose to provide the body with energy, while suppressing the immune system
Ovaries - Hormone and Effect?
Hormone - Oestrogen
Effect - Controls the regulation of the female reproductive system, including the menstrual cycle and pregnancy
