Divisions of the Nervous System Flashcards
1
Q
Two main subdivisions of the nervous system
A
Peripheral Nervous System (PNS) and Central Nervous System (CNS)
2
Q
Two divisions of the Central Nervous System (CNS)
A
Brain and Spinal Cord
3
Q
Two divisions of the Peripheral Nervous System
A
Somatic Nervous System and Autonomic Nervous System
4
Q
Two divisions of the Autonomic Nervous System
A
Sympathetic Branch and Parasympathetic Branch
5
Q
Somatic Nervous System
A
- Control centre = motor cortex
- Motor and sensory neurons that transmit information to and from the senses and to and from the CNS
- Controls voluntary movements, skeletal muscles, bone and reflex actions
6
Q
Autonomic Nervous System
A
- Control centre = top of the brain stem (hypothalamus and pituitary gland)
- Contains motor neurons
- Controls unconscious actions like function of internal organs and glands
7
Q
Responsibilities of the parasympathetic and sympathetic branches
A
Responsible for functions that keep the body in a stable state, regulate the same organs but have opposite effects
8
Q
Effects of the Parasympathetic Nervous System
A
- increases digestion
- increases saliva production
- decreases heart rate
- stimulates bile production
- contracts bladder
- constricts dilation
- constricts bronchi
9
Q
Effects of the Sympathetic Nervous System
A
- slows digestion
- inhibits saliva production
- increases heart rate
- stimulates glucose production
- relaxes bladder
- dilates pupils
- dilates bronchi
