Endocrine system Flashcards
What are target cells?
target cells are cells in the body that have a specific receptor for that hormone
What is a hormone?
A hormone is a signalling molecule that is released into the bloodstream
What is the hormonal system?
The hormonal system is one of the systems we used to communicate a detected change and to communicate a response
What is the endocrine system?
The endocrine system which is also known as a hormonal system it is a communication system that uses hormones as signalling molecules
Are hormones able to react to every type of cell in the body?
Hormones only act on the cells which are able to respond to them it’s only the cells with the receptors for the hormone that are affected ,The-cells that have the right receptors are known as target cells
What is the function of the pancreas and what hormone does the secrete?
The pancreas secretes insulin it controls blood glucose concentration when it rises it also produces glucagon which lowers blood glucose levels it stores the extra glucose as glycogen in the liver and muscles
What is the pituitary gland and what hormone does it secrete
The pituitary gland is also known as the master gland that produces different types of hormones some of which tell the body what to do and some of which that tells the glands to release the hormones.
what are islets of langerhans?
Islets of langerhans are a cluster of cells within the pancreas that are responsible for the production and release of hormones that regulate glucose levels
