Endocrine System Flashcards

1
Q

Hormones

A
  • Chemical substances that regulate and integrate body functions
  • Closely integrated with central and peripheral nervous systems
  • Function as modulators of cellular and systemic responses
  • Released from endocrine glands (hypothalamus, pituitary, thyroid, adrenal, pancreas)
  • Bring about their effects on cell activity by binding to specific cell receptors on target cells

Q

What are the two types of hormones?

A

Steroid hormones -
-derived from cholesterol and are lipid soluble
(they can cross the cell membrane to bind to their receptors inside the cell - intracellular nuclear receptors)

Non-steroid hormones - derived from peptides or amino acids and are water soluble. (they are unable to cross the lipid membrane and therefore must bind to receptors located on the surface of the cell
