endocrine- scope of hormones Flashcards
What is a hormone?
Hormone: a chemical mediator that is secreted by an endocrine tissue or gland into the blood, which transports it to its target cells
what produces hormones
endocrine glands
what are Tropic and trophic hormones
•A tropic hormone is classified as:
a hormone that has as its primary function the regulation of hormone secretion by another endocrine gland (e.g. thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH)
Trophic hormones stimulate and maintain their endocrine target tissues
E.g. thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH)
What hormones are hydrophilic and lipophillic?
•Hydrophilic
peptide
Catecholamines
Indoleamines
•Lipophilic
Thyroid hormone (Amine, iodinated tyrosine derivative)
Steroid hormones
• hormones influence their target cells by altering the cell’s proteins in one of two major way… what are these?
- Surface binding hydrophilic hormones function largely by activating 2nd messenger pathways within the target cell.
- Lipophilic hormones function mainly by activating specific genes in the target cell to cause formation of new intracellular proteins (enzymatic or structural).
