Q

how does the hypothalamus integrate nervous and endocrine activities together

A
  1. secretion of regulatory hormones
controls activity of anterior pituitary hormones
  2. synthesis of hormones
  3. direct neural control function

Q

what are the 3 classes of hormones

A

steroids - cholesterol backbone eg oestrogen

amine-derived eg adrenaline

peptides eg oxytocin

10
Q

what are steroids

A

derived from cholesterol
synthesis rates control the amounts
they are not stored
lipophilic > so are transported in the blood by binding to carrier proteins > then the free/unbound steroids are biologically active

Q

what are amine hormones

A

hydrophilic
are transported unbound in blood plasma

however thyroid amines are bound to carrier proteins

they are derived from amino acids
secreted from thyroid and adrenal medulla
stored in vesicles in the cytoplasm

12
Q

what are peptide hormones

A

vast majority
hydrophilic and are transported unbound in blood plasma
secreted by pituitary, parathyroid, heart stomach liver and kidneys
held together by disulphide bonds

16
Q

can steroid hormones pass through cells

A

yes - they are lipid soluble ie cell wall has a phospholipid bilayer their receptors are inside the cell

17
Q

can peptide hormones pass through cells

A

no - they need a receptor on the cell surface as they are water soluble

and so have to work through second messenger systems

18
Q

what are some examples of peptide hormone

A

oxytocin
insuline
parathyroid hormone
ADH
adrenaline

19
Q

what are some examples of steroid hormone

A

oestrogen
testosterone
progesterone
aldosterone
cortisol
