Endocrine Organs Flashcards
Melatonin is released here, regulating our biological clock. Smaller than pituitary, posterior.
Pineal Gland
Releasing hormones trigger hormone secretions of the anterior pituitary gland. Connected to the pituitary, part of the nervous system. Known to activate many hormones.
Hypothalamus
Growth hormone stimulates overall cellular growth and division. Sella Turcica releases hormones only.
Anterior Pituitary Gland
Oxytocin stimulates uterine contractions during labor. This gland does not produce hormones. It stores and secretes hormones from the Hypothalamus.
Posterior Pituitary Gland
Below the larynx, above the trachea, and controls metabolism. TH is released here.
Thyroid Gland
Below the thyroid, above the heart. Directs the maturation of T-lymphocytes (white blood cells).
Thymus
Epinephrine prolongs and enhances the sympathetic response (fight-or-flight). Both are located on top of both kidneys. Produces urine, renal system.
Adrenal Glands
Releases cortisol, aldosterone, and gonadocorticoid. 3 layers of cells. ACTH stimulates this gland.
Adrenal Cortex
Sympathetic preganglionic axons stimulate the _________ to release epinephrine and norepinephrine.
Adrenal Medulla
Behind the thyroid.
Parathyroid Glands
Positioned right below the heart, located in the upper right of the abdomen.
Liver
Inside the pelvis, thus reproductive.
- Ovaries: inside-female
- Testes: outside-male
