endocrine lectures Flashcards
hormone definition
to excite
endocrine vs exocrine definition
endocrine- glands pour secretion into blood stream
exocrine- glands pour secretion through a duct to site of action
example of exocrine
pancreas - amylase and lipase
example of endocrine
thyroid, adrenal, beta cells of pancreas
endocrine hormone action
blood-borne , acting at distant sites
paracrine hormone action
acting on adjacent sites
autocrine hormone action
feedback on same cell that secreted hormone
2 types of hormones
water-soluble and fat-soluble.
differences between water-soluble and fat-soluble hormones
water-soluble: unbound transport, bind to surface receptor, short half-life, fast clearance
fat-soluble: protein bound transport, diffuse into cell, long half-life , slow clearance
example of water-soluble hormones.
peptides and monoamines (stored in vesicles)
examples of fat-soluble hormones
thyroid hormone, steroids (synthesised on demand)
