Endocrine Disorders Flashcards
What is hyperthyroidism?
When your thyroid gland produces too much thyroid hormones. Autoimmune disorder. Also called Graves’ disease or toxic diffuse goiter.
What is hypothyroidism?
When your thyroid gland does not make enough thyroid hormones. Caused by T4 deficiency. Congenital form is cretinism. Adult form is myxedema.
What is thyroid cancer?
Cancer that starts in the thyroid gland.
What is hyperparathyroidism?
When your parathyroid glands produce too much parathyroid hormone (PTH). Most often caused by a tumor called an adenoma.
What is hypoparathyroidism?
When your parathyroid glands don’t make enough parathyroid hormone (PTH).
What is hyperpituitarism?
When your pituitary gland produce too much of it hormones, GH and prolactin.
What is hypopituitarism?
When the pituitary gland does not produce enough of its hormones, specifically GH.
What is Diabetes Insipidus?
A condition in which the kidneys are unable to conserve water. An excessive output of dilute urine. Results from underproduction of ADH.
What is syndrome of inappropriate anti diuretic hormone (SIADH)?
A water imbalance related to an increase in ADH synthesis or secretion, or both. It’s an inability to excrete dilute urine.
What is Addison’s disease?
When the adrenal glands do not produce enough cortisol and aldosterone. Most commonly caused by idiopathic atrophy.
What is Cushing’s syndrome?
Results from excess levels of the hormone cortisol in your body. Caused by adrenal hyper secretion.
What is Cushing’s disease?
Excessive production of ACTH because of a pituitary tumor.
What is acromegaly?
is a long-term condition in which there is too much growth hormone and the body tissues get larger over time.
What is adrenal crisis?
A life threatening condition that occurs when there is not enough cortisol.
What is thyroid storm (thyrotoxicosis)?
Is excessive stimulation caused by elevated thyroid hormone levels that produces dangerous tachycardia and hyperthermia.
