Endocrine Disorders Flashcards
Type 1 diabetes
-pancreas does not produce enough cells
-Immune system attacks insulin producing beta cells in pancreas
What are symptoms of type 1 diabetes?
Diaphoretic, pale, shallow breathing, anxiety, confusion, weight loss, polyuria, polydipsia
What are the treatments for for type 1 diabetes
Hypoglycaemia- oral glucose, complex carbs, <2yrs, 2ml/kg max 50ml, 10 min interval, max # 2 times, equal to or >2yrs, 2ml/kg max of 250ml/kg, 10 min interval, max #2 times. Glucagon <25kg, 0.5mg, 20 mins, 2 times. >25 1mg
Hyperglycemic- ACP, insulin,
What is type 2 diabetes
-Pancreas still produces insulin but body cells don’t respond properly and become insulin resistant.
- fat tissue produces a substance that impairs insulin resistant.
Symptoms of type 2 diabetes
Polydipsia, polyuria, fatigue, dry mouth, N/V, blurred vision
Treatment of type 2 diabetes
Diet, PO meds, insulin
What is DKA?
When BGL is to high for long periods of time, the body breaks down fats due to incificent insulin to use as glucose for energy. This produces ketones, which makes body acidic.
DKA symptoms?
Type 1 diabetes, kassmaul resps, acetone odour, increased HR, decreased LOC, decreased BP, abdominal pain, polydipsia, polyuria
What is HHNK?
Extremely high BGL causes severe dehydration which leads to electrolyte and water imbalance, making blood thicker, body does not produce ketones.
What is symptoms of HHNK?
Type 2, normal resps, increased HR, decreased bp, decreased LOC,
