Endocrine Flashcards
Pituitary Gland
Follicle Stimulating Hormone (FSH)
Female- acts on ovary to cause growth and maturation of ovarian follicles
Male- interstitial cell stimulating hormone (ICSH) stimulates sperm production
Thyroid Gland
Thyroxine is secreted by thyroid in 2 forms: T3 and T4
Calcitonin - stimulated by hypercalcaemia
Parathyroid Gland
Parathyroid Hormone (PTH)
Important role in calcium balance
Raises plasma calcium
Stimulates reabsorption in kidney tubules
Pancreas
Contains clusters of endocrine cells called ISLETS OF LANGERHANS that secrete
Insulin - lowers blood glucose
Adrenal
Cortex in adrenal - adrogen - emphasises masculine features
Medulla in adrenal - prepares animal for dangerous / stressful situs and increase HR and respiration
Ovaries
Oestrogen - stimulates female sex characteristics and oestrus behaviour
Testes
Testosterone- stimulates the development of the male sex characteristics and spermatogenesis
