Endocrine Flashcards
Hormone
A chemical substance produced in the body that controls and regulates the activity of certain cells or organs.
E.g. thyroid hormone produced by the thyroid gland.
Gland
Organ in the human body which chemical substances use in the human body.
E.g. Thyroid gland which uses hormones
Endocrine System
The endocrine system is the collection of glands that produce hormones that regulate, metabolism growth and development.
E.g. they help with and build metabolism and growth ect.
Target Cell
A cell which bears receptors for a hormone. Example receptors for blood cells.
E.g. Receptors for blood cells.
Blood Stream
A two way lane which carries hormones, cancers, cells and many other things that are good or bad.
E.g. hormones being carried out through the body.
Feed Back Loop
A feedback loop is a term commonly used in economics to refer to a situation where part of the output of a situation is used for new input.
E.g. Temp rises-Artic sea melts-Water levels rise
Homeostatis
The tendency towards a relatively stable equilibrium between interdependent elements, especially as maintained by physiological processes.
E.g. Humans internal body temperature.
Equilibrium
A state in which opposing forces or influences are balanced.
E.g. When you are calm and steady or when economics supply and demand are equal.
Chemical Messenger
A chemical messenger is any compound that serves to transmit a message.
E.g. Neurotransmitter communicates to adjacent cells.
Hypothalamus
A region of the forebrain below the thalamus which coordinates both the autonomic nervous system and the activity of the pituitary, controlling body temperature, thirst, hunger, and other homeostatic systems.
E.g. This area of the brain houses systems such as pituitary gland.
Secretion
A process by which substances are produced and discharged from a cell, gland, or organ for a particular function in the organism or for excretion.
E.g. Secrete regulatory molecules such as hormones and neurotransmitters
Diabetes
A disorder of the metabolism causing excessive thirst and the production of large amounts of urine.
E.g. Type 1 diabetes and type 2.
Pancreas
A large gland behind the stomach which secretes digestive enzymes into the duodenum.
E.g. It diegestes your food and the main chemical balances your blood sugar.
Insulin
A hormone produced in the pancreas by the islets of Langerhans, which regulates the amount of glucose in the blood.
E.g. Lack of insulin may occur a form of diabetes.
Glucagon
A hormone formed in the pancreas which promotes the breakdown of glycogen to glucose in the liver.
E.g. It’s produced in the pancreas and helps break down glucose in the river
