Endocrine Flashcards
Hormonal stimulation
Stimulates the release of many hormones from its endocrine gland and helps bind other hormones. Eg when thyroid stimulating hormone binds to the thyroid gland to cause the release of thyroid hormone
Humoral stimulation
Some endocrine glands are stimulates to release their hormones in response to changing levels of nutrient molecules (glucose) or ions (CA2+) within the blood. When either nutrient or ion levels decrease or increase within the blood responsive cells of an endocrine gland release hormones. Eg blood glucose levels increasing and the pancreas releases insulin
Nervous system stimulation
A few endocrine glands are stimulated to release hormones by direct stimulation from the nervous system. Eg release of epinephrine or norepinephrine by adrenal medulla in response to stimulation by the sympathetic division of the autonomic nervous system
